It’s been a while now since we’ve first noticed advertising at the local coffee stands for Lotus Energy drinks. I have only recently been wondering what exactly goes into making this delicious drink?

Lotus energy concentrates are made from a blend of coffee fruit (cascara), green coffee beans, super fruits, lotus flower extract, and a few other select botanicals. The majority of the ingredients are high in anti-oxidants and vary based on the flavor of the lotus.

There’s lots to know about this wonderful alternative to traditional coffee. From its caffeine content to the number of total carbohydrates we’ll tell you what we know about this delicious drink.

A Deep Dive Into The Contents

Above we listed all of the primary ingredients in Lotus Energy concentrates. We’re going to briefly go over each one and tell you what we know about them.

Lotus Energy drinks get their caffeine properties from the same source as traditional coffee through a cherry-like coffee fruit called cascara. The difference is that traditional coffee is made by harvesting the bean-shaped seed, discarding the outer part of the cherry, and putting it through a roasting process. Lotus Energy uses an extraction process on both the seed and its outer layers.

Lotus Energy gets its name from one of its most reputable ingredients, the lotus flower. Healthline.com has a great overview of the Lotus flower and the benefits involved with it. Namely, the flower has antioxidants and is associated with revitalizing properties such as increased consciousness. This makes the ingredient a great addition to this plant-based beverage.

Schisandra Berry is an ingredient commonly found in formulas used to reduce stress and lower blood pressure.

Rhodiola Rosea Extract is the last noticeable ingredient in these concentrates worth mentioning and is another common stress-relieving element. It is an herb that can be found in Europe and certain regions in Asia. We found that this ingredient is also frequently found in anti-fatigue treatments, which makes it a great addition to lotus energy drinks.

From an outsider’s perspective, it’s obvious that Lotus Energy pushed for ingredients that were high in anti-oxidants. Which I suppose is not a huge shock given that this is a plant based energy drink.

Does Lotus Energy have Caffeine?

In General, Lotus Energy drinks contain 80mg of caffeine per 1oz of concentrate. This is the case with all of Lotus Energy’s concentrates that contain caffeine. Some products they produce do not contain caffeine.

All of our Lotus Energy recipes here on our site have 1.5 ounces of concentrate in a 16oz serving. Therefore, our recipes are going to have approximately 120mg of caffeine if you’re using them.

If you want a bigger caffeine boost, you can try the Lotus Power Up. This product contains 80 mg of caffeine and only 1 calorie per oz of concentrate. This is similar to adding additional shots of espresso to a traditional coffee drink.

Some Lotus products do not contain caffeine. Below is a list of Lotus Energy concentrates that do not have caffeine.

  • Super Cream
  • Old Fashioned Lemonade

The table above is a display of the number of carbs found in the caffeinated concentrates. It’s also important to note that this does not include the additional amount of carbs you would get from adding flavored syrups as well.

Standard Energy concentrates (such as red, blue, white, etc.) that you will find in most coffee stands contain the most carbohydrates per serving. As far as flavored options go, the Skinny line of concentrates is going to offer the least amount of carbs and is a great option for carb-conscious consumers.

If you’re looking at the power-up and noticing that there are zero carbs please keep in mind that it is tasteless. It’s a product that should be looked at more as a product to increase the caffeine content of your beverage.

The Lotus Super Cream contains an additional 18 grams of carbs per serving. If you are watching your carb intake, consider using coconut milk for a low carb creamer option. And bonus! coconut milk doesn’t separate out in the lotus drinks.
